The Client
The Homeless Ministry at The Rock Church in Point Loma serves the homeless community in downtown San Diego (and will be expanding to other areas soon). They have specific outreaches 6 days a week to offer help and provide hope to their homeless neighbors. For more information visit The Rock Homeless Ministry.
The Project
For this micro-documentary we followed the ministry for 2 months. Because many of the homeless neighbors don’t warm up to newcomers right away, yet alone newcomers with video cameras and other gear, we spent the first month participating in the outreaches without any of our gear. Over this time we were able to develop relationships with many of the volunteers and homeless neighbors. Once a good rapport was established, we slowly and subtly started documenting the outreaches. We witnessed and recorded several heartbreaking and uplifting stories from the homeless neighbors as well as the volunteers who help them.
The Result
The final product is a 3 minute micro-documentary that gives a small, authentic look into how the ministry is touching the lives of everyone involved. The film was shown at all 5 services at The Rock Church on Sunday, July 12, 2009 to approximately 15,000 in attendance. It since has provided the ministry with a shot of energy and a new awareness that is bringing in new volunteers and new resources every week.
